The Green Marathon’s founder is Mark Smurthwaite, a PhD candidate at University of Central Lancashire. His interests and passions have always been in sustainability area and looking at the philosophy of sustainability.
When he was young, he saw first-hand the damage plastic was doing to our oceans while on family vacation in 2008. Mark had the courage to spend years researching to try and find a way to help the world become greener. He believes the journey is like a marathon, its challenging but achievable.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create a community of like minded individuals and businesses to be the change that is needed to leave the world better for future generations. We are not perfect, but we believe in better and we know we are better together.
You don’t have to be a hardcore environmentalist to make a difference. It’s the little things, like riding your bike to work, bringing your own grocery bag, and buying an item that plants ten trees – they all add up. Especially when millions of other people start doing them too. For example, I started little things like litter picking with my kids when we went for weekend walks.
We’re committed to minimising our environmental impact, uplifting the well-being of our people with ethical labour rights, and safe workplaces, and recognising our social responsibility to keep our business practices as transparent as possible. Green Marathon has been helping companies like Pelican Shipping Ltd to review the materials they were using to build the cruise and advice on new ways of protecting the ocean and the local environment.
